Land Cruiser auxiliary tanks: Long Ranger vs LRA

By Trailsetter approx. 6 min read

Long Ranger Ersatztank 180 Liter Diesel für den Toyota Land Cruiser 76 und 79 ab 2012

In short: Long Ranger and LRA (Long Range Automotive) both build vehicle-specific steel tanks in Australia. According to ARB, Long Ranger uses 2 mm aluminised steel; according to supplier data, LRA uses 2 mm T125CQ steel. More important than the brand is whether there is a replacement or auxiliary tank for your model series and what it changes on the vehicle: filler neck, fuel gauge, spare wheel and exhaust. Of the two brands, we only stock LRA for the 40, 60, 80 series and the Prado; for the 70, 100, 200 and 300 we stock both.

Replacement tank or auxiliary tank?

A replacement tank sits in place of the standard tank and holds more. An auxiliary tank is added to the standard tank, usually with its own filler neck and a pump that transfers the fuel. The examples in the table come from the manufacturer's information on LRA tanks for the Land Cruiser 79.

Other models behave differently. The 150-litre LRA auxiliary tank for the 75 and 79 cab chassis, for example, uses the spare wheel position, so the spare has to move to a rear carrier. Read the notes in the title and description of every tank.

Example Land Cruiser 200: two replacement tanks side by side

The 200 Series shows how closely you need to look. The 177-litre Long Ranger TR68LTWIN is built for diesel vehicles with a twin exhaust. According to its description, the 170-litre LRA replacement tank only fits vehicles with two standard tanks and replaces the 45-litre second tank. On 27 Oct 2026 both tanks cost between €2,200 and €2,400. Which one fits depends on your vehicle's specification.

What to check before you buy

  1. Fuel: diesel or petrol. Many tanks are only available for one fuel type.
  2. Factory tanks: some models require one or two standard tanks. The 155-litre LRA replacement tank for the 75 and 79, for example, needs two factory tanks, the 150-litre LRA auxiliary tank only one.
  3. Body and cab: wagon, Troop Carrier, pick-up with single or double cab, cab chassis or factory tub.
  4. Exhaust and spare wheel: does the exhaust need modifying, does the spare wheel have to move?
  5. Accessories: according to the manufacturer, the 150-litre LRA auxiliary tank is not compatible with the Toyota towbars PZQ64-60074 and PZQ64-60073. The 90-litre LRA auxiliary tank for the double cab is not compatible with JMACX and Superior Engineering coil spring conversions.
  6. Weight: under the EN 590 standard, diesel weighs between 0.82 and 0.845 kg per litre. 180 litres are around 150 kg of fuel, plus the tank. According to the supplier, the shipping weight of a 155-litre LRA tank is 57 kg. Adjust the suspension, see Land Cruiser suspension & lift.

Registration in Germany

A larger or additional tank is a modification to the vehicle. Under § 19 StVZO, the operating permit lapses if a modification can be expected to endanger road users, unless the part has its own approval and you follow the fitting instructions. If there is no suitable approval, an individual assessment under § 21 StVZO remains. This is general information, not legal advice. Ask us before you buy about the documents for your tank and agree the registration with your inspector. Frequently asked questions

Is Long Ranger or LRA better?

There is no general answer, and we have not run our own comparison tests. Both build vehicle-specific steel tanks in Australia. What matters is which tank is approved for your model series, your fuel and your accessories.

Does the fuel gauge still work with a replacement tank?

With the LRA replacement tanks for the 76 and 79, the manufacturer states that the standard sender is reused and the float arm adapted, on the VDJ76 for example extended by 50 mm. Check the information for your model.

Do I need a pump with an auxiliary tank?

With the LRA auxiliary tanks for the 79, an electric pump transfers the fuel into the main tank, and a gauge in the cab shows the pump and fuel level. A replacement tank does not need a transfer pump.

Are there tanks for fuel and water in one?

Yes, from Long Ranger: 120 litres of diesel plus 55 litres of water for the 100 and 105 with a solid front axle, and 122 litres plus 55 litres of water for the 100 with independent front suspension and the 200.

How are tanks delivered?

Usually by freight. The shipping method is in the technical data, the delivery time on the product page.
